According to the original 1955 liner notes to Clifford Brown and Max Roach, the announcement that Clifford Brown and Max Roach had begun recording and playing together sent shock waves throughout the jazz community and predictions ran rampant about how the two might shape bop to come. The last duo to really shape the music had begun over ten years earlier, with the relationship between Bird and Diz. This recording was early fruit from a tree that would only live as long as Clifford Brown was around to water it (1956, the year of his tragic auto accident). The result is by far some of the warmest and most sincere bebop performed and committed to tape. Brown's tone is undeniably and characteristically warm, and he keeps the heat on alongside Roach's lilting vamps and pummeling solos. What really keeps this record on the orange side of things (other than the decidedly orange cover) is the solo work of saxophonist Harold Land, who plays part Bird and part Benny Goodman. His tone is as delightful as it gets on the sultry "Deliah" and as bop-expressive as it gets on "The Blues Walk" and "Parisian Thoroughfare," where he and Brownie go head to head blowing expressive runs of sheer New York-style jazz. This collection of songs runs a nice gamut between boplicity and pleasant balladry. It represents bop at its best and is recommended for collectors and casual fans alike. During the '70s, the Spinners' pairing with Philadelphia producer Thom Bell resulted in some of the most fulfilling and immaculately produced albums of the era. The pairing brought the group six gold singles and five gold albums. Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow in effect drew the hitmaking ways to a screeching halt. The group had declined shortly after 1975's Pick of the Litter. That was perfectly acceptable. Both Mighty Love and Pick of the Litter were two of the best albums of the '70s so there wasn't anywhere to go but down. The lyrical decline that was evident on this album's predecessor, Happiness Is Being With the Spinners, is even clearer here. In fact, most of the sessions on this album were recorded at the same time as Happiness Is Being With the Spinners. The problems with this were seen immediately. "Me and My Music" like most songs about the joys of the music are always danger zones and folksy rural asides of lead singer Phillipe Wynne made it even more cloying. The elegiac "I'm Riding Your Shadow Down to Love" is so beautifully arranged -- from the strings to the near three-dimensional harmony -- that it made it easy to overlook the incoherent lyrics. As for hit potential, the likeable "You're the Love of My Life" was this album's best shot at a hit single but was left unreleased. Not that it would have made much of a difference at this point. This was Phillipe Wynne's swan song and the fact that he was ready to barrel out the door put a damper on the festivities. Both "Just to Be With You" and "Throwing a Good Love Away" recall his past glories without half of the charm. In an odd note, on the track "Honey, I'm in Love With You" produced and arranged by Thom Bell's brother Tony Bell, is a good-natured song that seemed custom made for Phillipe Wynne, but he's not even on it. The lead on the track is John Edwards. He attempts Wynne's aphorisms and rhythm style before giving up and unleashing high-pitched wails and his own barrage of ad-libs. Taken on its own, Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow is a good effort, but the Spinners' earlier '70s efforts are where the consistently great work is found. ~ Jason Elias, All Music Guide

Pushing the Envelope is an ironic title for a Gerald Albright album because quite frankly, pushing the envelope is something that the saxophonist hasn't done very much of during his long recording career. Nonetheless, some optimists will see that title and hope that Albright has given listeners another hardcore jazz treasure like 1991's Live at Birdland West, which remains the most essential album in his catalog (at least as of early 2010). But no, Pushing the Envelope isn't another Live at Birdland West. This is primarily a smooth jazz album, not the type of hell-bent-for-improvisation disc that he is still quite capable of delivering. The good news, however, is that as much as this 2010 release caters to smooth jazz radio at times, it is seldom embarrassing the way that some of his early releases on Atlantic were embarrassing (1987's Just Between Us, 1989's Bermuda Nights, and 1990's Dream Come True were among the worst offenders). There are definitely some likable tracks here. The lively "Capetown Strut," for example, combines pop-jazz and South African pop with infectious results, and equally catchy are the jazz-funk grooves that Albright provides on "Highway 70," "What Would James Do?" (an obvious shout-out to the late Godfather of Soul James Brown), and the Afro-Cuban-tinged "Bobo's Groove" (which Albright dedicates to percussionist Willie Bobo). Unfortunately, Pushing the Envelope does venture into elevator music territory on occasion; Albright's saccharine performance of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Close to You" is a prime example of why smooth jazz has such a bad reputation -- even among the non-purist jazz commentators who have been strong proponents of, say, David Sanborn, Ronnie Laws, or Grover Washington, Jr. And equally forgettable is Albright's cover of Michael Jackson's "Get on the Floor," which he reduces to innocuous background music (although Jackson's original 1979 version from Off the Wall was certainly a gem). But despite the presence of a few weak tracks, Pushing the Envelope on the whole isn't a bad album. Anyone who owns a copy of Live at Birdland West knows that Albright is capable of a lot more, but even so, this disc has more going for it than a lot of the smooth jazz-oriented releases of 2010. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
