Leon Thomas - Blues & the Soulful Truth
JAZZ+SOUL | FLAC | CUE | LOG | 600DPI | 289MB | 42:45
Flying Dutchman 1972

Цитата:
The late Leon Thomas was a vocalist who has proven to be influential among jazz and blues saxophonists, guitarists, and pianists, who've admitted their debt to his innovation. However, though there are many jazz and blues vocalists who have benefited from his style as well, he is seldom acknowledged for his highly original -- and idiosyncratic -- contribution to them. One can only speculate as to why, though Thomas' full-throated style which employed everything from yodels and Joe Turner-ish growls and shouts may have been too wide for anyone to grasp in its entirety without overtly sounding as if they were aping him. At the time of this reissue (2001), the only other Leon Thomas titles available under his own leadership were a European best-of collection and the inferior live album (badly edited), Sunrise on Gold Mountain. Blues and the Soulful Truth is among the artist's most enduring performances, either as a leader or sideman. There is his trademark, otherworldly modal improvisation on Gabor Szabo's exotica classic "Gypsy Queen," the deep, greasy gutbucket, funky blues of "Let's Go Down to Lucy" and "L-O-V-E," and the traditional tune "C.C. Rider" -- though Thomas' arrangement is anything but -- among a lengthy, eight-song set. Perhaps the most revealing examples of his singularity is his ability to interpret a song like John Lee Hooker's "Boom, Boom" as funky, jazzed-out, angular R&B -- enabled mightily by the saxophone stylings of Pee Wee Ellis and the criminally under-appreciated pianism of Neal Creque and the wild violin of John Blair -- after coming out of a pop-oriented soul tune such as "Love Each Other," written with a groove prevalent among commercial jazz and R&B recordings of the time, both sounding sincere, authentic, and completely full of the singer's presence. Indeed, on the aforementioned "Gypsy Queen" or his own "Shape Your Mind to Die," Thomas inhabits his material fully, as if nobody ever had ever sung or heard these songs and would ever sing them again. Also, the production innovation and percussive touches many of these tunes have yet to be repeated (Pharoah Sanders, Thomas' previous employer who introduced the singer to the world, adopted some of the artist's percussive techniques permanently), like the firecrackers raining against Airto Moreira's drums and Larry Coryell's ethereal guitar riffs, or the use of a "prepared" vibraphone and coat hangers in "China Doll," as they slip against the singer's wail and moan, and the elegant stick and brushwork of Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. In sum, Blues and the Soulful Truth (Which does echo Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth in vision as well as title), is a tour through the depth and dimension of Thomas' mind-blowing abilities as a singer in a wide range of African American musical traditions, proving at the time, and now again, that he was far more than a free jazz singer. Indeed, the artist not only was a stylist of originality, but a composer, arranger, ethnomusicologist, and a singer of startling beauty and power -- no matter the song. This album is a singular achievement, even among the fine recordings in Thomas' own catalogue, and should be considered first by those curious enough to look into his work -- you won't be disappointed no matter what you find, but this one will take you places you never anticipated going. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

Aretha Franklin - I Never Loved A Man
SOUL | FLAC | CUE | LOG | CUE | PNG | 232MB | 41:26
Atlantic 1967

Цитата:
While the inclusion of "Respect" -- one of the truly seminal singles in pop history -- is in and of itself sufficient to earn I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You classic status, Aretha Franklin's Atlantic label debut is an indisputable masterpiece from start to finish. Much of the credit is due to producer Jerry Wexler, who finally unleashed the soulful intensity so long kept under wraps during her Columbia tenure; assembling a crack Muscle Shoals backing band along with an abundance of impeccable material, Wexler creates the ideal setting to allow Aretha to ascend to the throne of Queen of Soul, and she responds with the strongest performances of her career. While the brilliant title track remains the album's other best-known song, each cut on I Never Loved a Man is touched by greatness; covers of Ray Charles' "Drown in My Own Tears" and Sam Cooke's "Good Times" and "A Change Is Gonna Come" are on par with the original recordings, while Aretha's own contributions -- "Don't Let Me Lose This Dream," "Baby, Baby, Baby," "Save Me," and "Dr. Feelgood (Love Is a Serious Business)" -- are perfectly at home in such lofty company. A soul landmark. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

Musiq Soulchild - Musiqinthemagiq
R&B | FLAC | CUE | LOG | PNG | 365MB | 44:28
Atlantic 2011

Цитата:
For his sixth album’s lead single, Musiq went back to his “club 1981” playlist, where he pulled Taana Gardner's “Heartbeat” for the basis of “B.U.D.D.Y.” -- a 2007 Top 40 single -- and picks “Walking into Sunshine.” “Anything” replays much of the Central Line classic, with Musiq delivering another one of his feel-good, relatively wholesome spring/summer R&B radio hits. It sets the tone for Musiqinthemagiq, which does not stray far from Musiq’s past but features some developments, such as the singer’s increased comfort with falsetto deployment (“Sayido,” “Waitingstill”) and a charming mid-‘60s soul throwback (“Love Contract”). There’s also something of a successor to “Sobeautiful,” the equally hypnotic and chivalrous “Medicine.” At the very end, Musiq buries a thoroughly modern gem featuring a spacy, irregular beat from Jesse Wilson and the Kaliphat. That song, “Likethesun,” is a brilliant and unexpected change-up where Musiq also provides one of his best vocals, dipping beneath and vaulting above the stop-start percussion patterns and swarming synthesizers. He should consider doing that type of thing more often. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Ivy Queen - Musa
REGGAETON | FLAC | CUE | LOG | COVER | 253MB | 33:05
Siente 2012

Цитата:
On her eighth studio effort, reggaeton's leading lady offers her usual mix of straight-up reggaeton and flirtations with pop and/or R&B, but this time it's the former that's most striking and vital. Hard-hitting cuts like "No Hay!!!" and "La 'Killer'" boom with that street attitude and the Queen's stern delivery, but it's the closing "Real G4 Life" that tops them all, slowly slithering out of the speakers and winding about the room like a serpent about to strike. All are worth inclusion on her next "best-of," and so are the more polished "Peligro de Extinción" and the elegant and bittersweet "A Donde Va." Put together, this is the proper Ivy Queen mix of pop and punch, and even if the album just barely crosses the half-hour mark, it's easier to praise it for being tight and lean than to complain about its brevity. Diva status maintained. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Down to the Bone - The Main Ingredients
JAZZ | WAVPACK | CUE | LOG | COVERS | 462MB | 63:15
Trippin’n Rhythm 2011

Цитата:
Critically lauded in the U.S. but entirely ignored in their U.K. homeland, acid jazz collective Down to the Bone's ninth studio album, The Main Ingredients, is unlikely to change matters, sticking resolutely to their formula of epic eight-minute instrumental jams and the odd soul-funk vocal track. Having recruited '90s Eurovision entrant Imaani (who replaces regular Hill St. Soul vocalist Hilary Mwelwa) and former Incognito bassist Julian Crampton to their ever-changing collective lineup, their first release through Trippin 'N' Rhythm Records shows glimpses of the potential that was realized in the mid-'90s by Jamiroquai and Brand New Heavies, particularly the funky bass licks and tight grooves of the Latin-tinged "Watch Me Fly," which could have been lifted off the latter's Brother Sister, and the breezy melodies and chilled-out sax solos of "Closer," but as ever, founder Stuart Wade appears far more concerned with providing a soundtrack for the clubs of their debut album's title, From Manhattan to Staten, than appealing to the mainstream. The lounge-bar piano chords of "Music Is the Key," the twinkling vibraphones of "A Universal Vibe," and the smooth wah-wah jazz of "A Change Has Got to Come" are all likely to keep the cocktails flowing, but the rather self-indulgent bookends "Uptown Hustle" and "Cut and Run" are just as likely to have clubbers reaching for the skinny lattes in order to stay awake. Sticking to what they know best, Down to the Bone are single-handedly keeping the acid jazz scene alive, but while The Main Ingredients is an effortlessly smooth affair, there's little here to spark a full-scale revival. ~ Jon O'Brien, All Music Guide

Charlie Wilson - Just Charlie
R&B | FLAC | CUE | LOG | COVERS | 282MB | 38:38
JIVE 2010

Цитата:
On Charlie Wilson‘s 2010 release, Just Charlie, the former Gap Band singer sticks with the high-quality “grown folks” R&B material that put his previous two albums in the Top Ten of Billboard 200 album chart. Besides whittling the number of special guests down from three to one, casual fans will have problems telling this one from his previous release, but these ten smooth cuts go down easy and give no sign the formula has stopped working. “My Girl is a Dime” is filled with enough pride and passion, “Lotto” feels like it’s delivered from the center of the romance winner’s circle, and Charlie’s cover of Zapp’s slow funk favorite “I Wanna Be Your Man” is highly desirable and well inspired as it turns into a duet with Fantasia. “You Are” is the grand romance ballad and key track, while everything else is as comfortable, coolly sexy, and warm as fans desire. Maybe the album naming scheme -- Charlie, Last Name Wilson, Uncle Charlie, Just Charlie -- could be reconsidered, but otherwise, this is Wilson the way you want him. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

Kelis - Flesh Tone
ELECTRO | FLAC | CUE | LOG | PNG | 361MB | 37:43
Interscope 2010

Цитата:
To say Kelis has been through some changes would be an understatement. Since the 2006 release Kelis Was Here, she moved from Jive to will.i.am's Interscope-affiliated vanity imprint, divorced Nas, and gave birth to a boy. Between all that, in addition to a catalog of four R&B albums that deserved greater sales, she could be forgiven for making something like a mindless dance-pop album. While Flesh Tone is a headlong dive into sleek dance-pop -- one that could have been forecast years prior, given her collaborations with Moby, Timo Maas, and Richard X, and let us never forget Diddy’s “Let’s Get Ill” -- it is much more personal than any of her past releases. “Acapella,” one of two tracks made with David Guetta, seems merely redemptive (“It’s just me surviving alone,” “Before you, my whole life was acapella”) until considering that it comes from a woman whose marriage fell through just prior to motherhood. The song that creates the album’s second greatest rush is also about parenthood; “Song for the Baby” similarly strikes as a boilerplate dancefloor love song on the surface, but once its subject sinks in, “I love you more than you’ll ever know” disarms quicker than any line from “Get Along with You” or “Rolling Through the Hood.” The remaining tracks are based in romantic relationships, but not all of them are about moving ahead. The churning “Intro” is bleak, just about hopeless (“Your force so dark, now my life feels uninspired”), yet it is just as powerful as anything else on the album. Nine songs with seven unique sets of production credits whip by in 38 minutes. The setup works because the songs are conjoined and dynamically ordered, like each collaborator knew what was required to complement the other tracks without sacrificing any distinct sonic character. Whether or not Flesh Tone remains a stylistic outlier, the disc will always be a bright standout in Kelis' discography. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Цитата:
The Rippingtons' 20th studio album, 2014's Fountain of Youth, is an expansive, layered, and stylistically varied release conceptualized around the travels of early European explorers like Juan Ponce de León, whose search for an elusive magical fountain inspired the album's title. Once again showcasing guitarist and longtime bandleader Russ Freeman, the album finds the journeyman smooth jazz outfit exploring a wide array of sounds, from the cinematic, flamenco-infused "Rivers of Gold" to the percussion and flute-heavy "We Will Live Forever" and the funky, blues-infused "Soul Riders." This is an ambitious, colorful release. ~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide

Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information/Wings of Love
DOUBLE ALBUM | SOUL | FLAC | CUE | LOG | PNG | 825MB | 155:58
Legacy 2013

Цитата:
As Shuggie Otis never capitalized on his newfound success in the '90s, somehow incapable of cobbling together a new record in the wake of the 2001 Luaka Bop reissue of Inspiration Information, it may be easy for partisans to overrate the 2013 Legacy pairing of that 1974 album with Wings of Love, a new collection of material Otis recorded between 1975 and 2000. That quarter-century span should be a tip-off that this is not a lean, coherent, purposeful album, but rather a collection of every listenable thing Otis completed over the course of 25 years, and in that sense, it's pretty good. Part of its appeal is that it is so thoroughly out of phase with the present that some songs seem to date either much earlier or much later than their original recording (for instance, the title track "Wings of Love" feels heavily inspired by Todd Rundgren's 1975 classic "Real Man," but apparently wasn't tracked until 1990). All of Wings of Love has a slightly woozy, trippy feel, something characteristic of its one-man-band origin, where keyboards and compressed microphones create a hazy tapestry, and part of the appeal of this music is how it feels like the late '70s and early '80s without belonging to its time; it certainly doesn't feel modern, but it can't be pinned to any specific year, which is appropriate as Otis essentially dropped out of sight and made this music in a vacuum. That isolation is certainly part of the appeal of Wings of Love, particularly because Otis isn't entirely unaware of what constituted a hit in 1987, so he overloads "Give Me a Chance" with drum machines and synthesizers that belong to the spring of that year, and part of the fun is hearing the disconnect between Otis' aspirations and what made for a hit in 1987, or how "Give Me Chance" isn't that far removed from 1977's tinny, pulsating "Don't You Run Away." Both of these are good songs and there are other good moments here, some sounding quite different than expected (the overloaded Hendrixian guitar of "Fireball of Love"), but the fact that the 1977 and 1987 tracks do not have a great distance in either their production or sensibility doesn't speak to a unique vision, it illustrates how far into his own world Otis was. And while that's an interesting place to visit, Wings of Love doesn't speak to a misunderstood genius; it's the sound an eccentric who was able to run wild for years on end, never caring about whether his music would be heard. In theory, that's fascinating. In practice, it's generally a curiosity. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Manu Katche - Manu Katche
JAZZ | FLAC | CUE | LOG | COVERS | 321MB | 52:12
ECM 2012

Цитата:
The French-Ivorian former rock-drummer Manu Katché is a player you can listen to for his sound alone. The themes here aren't as striking as they were on his fine Neighbourhood and Playground sessions of 2004/5, but the balance is intriguingly different. The bass role is now played by pianist and Hammond organist Jim Watson, who joins the Norwegian saxophonist Tore Brunborg and the trumpet and electronics sound-painter Nils Petter Molvaer on an all-Katché repertoire. There are slow pieces that sound like pop ballads (the gliding Loving You), coolly strutting episodes (Walking by Your Side), or boppish bass-walks (Short Ride) for Brunborg's languid improvising over a Katché sound as crisp as Philly Joe Jones with the 1950s Miles Davis quintet. Molvaer rubs in the Miles connection with his beautiful lonely trumpet meditation on Slowing the Tides. It's more conventional than Katché's earlier output, but it's sensual and elegant. --John Fordham, The Guardian

Oli Silk - Razor Sharp Brit

Trippin N' Rhythm 2013

Цитата:
Venturing across the pond once again with this fourth and latest installment in his series of solo records is fan fave, keyboardist/producer Oli Silk with 'Razor Sharp Brit' a freewheeling engaging assemblage of sides full of spunk , vigor and sophistication presented with his own unique European flair. While Silk's music is always easy on the ear, it is the fact that he keeps things fresh, progressive and is not afraid to dance around the edges that gives his music wide appeal and keeps it from blending into the contemporary jazz landscape. 'Brit' stays with that formula as the young man with the memorable name, dishes up a menu of memorable tunes that will beckon you to not just merely nibble but to feast upon. Having established himself as a first call player /producer in his motherland of England, sharing the stage with virtually all of the smooth jazz luminaries and hopping the pond over the last 5 yrs bringing his talents and sharp wit to the American audience has serve Silk well in helping him establish an active and rabid fan base. Razor Sharp Brit is sure to keep the movement afloat and momentum building as he again serves up a feast of fresh and vibrant new flavors. Some of Silk's closest CJ contemporaries join the fray, with bassist and label mate Julian Vaughn featured on the lead radio single 'At Your Service' , spins musical webs with guitarists Paul Brown and Chuck Loeb and brings up and coming sax man Elan Trotman along for the ride.

Graham Central Station - Graham Central Station
FUNK | FLAC | CUE | LOG | PNG ARTWORK | 282MB | 38:28
Warner Brothers 1973

Цитата:
This promising 1973 album represents bass wizard Larry Graham's first post-Sly and the Family Stone work. Much like his previous band, Graham Central Station was a multiracial unit that blended soul grooves and pop hooks to create an exuberant hybrid. However, Graham Central Station gives Graham's bass work a more upfront role in the sound and adds further layers of rhythms with drum machines and rhythmic-sounding keyboards like the clavinet. The result is a disc that is equal parts pop-soul ("Ain't No Fun to Me") and funk ("We Be Gettin' Down"). The blend isn't as seamless as one might hope, which means some songs are stronger on groove then they are on melody: "Tell Me What It Is" has a great groove built on a seamless mix of thumping bass and throbbing drum machine, but lacks the melodic hooks necessary to make it a truly memorable song. Another problem is that the lyrics are underdeveloped in places: "People" rails against injustice but fails to point the finger at a specific cause, and "Why?" treads on too-familiar love lament territory. Despite these problems, Graham Central Station remains an engaging listen thanks to fine musicianship; even when the songs are lacking in hooks, there is an abundance of cool riffs and stellar vocal harmonies that will make funk fans smile. When this musicianship is applied to the right songs, the results are pure magic: "Hair" wraps a clever lyric about tolerance around a huge groove driven by one of Graham's serpentine basslines, and "Can You Handle It?" effectively fuses a pop melody built on a sing-along chorus to a propulsive bass/keyboard groove (it also became the group's first chart hit). In short, casual listeners may want to pick up this album's highlights on a compilation, but funk lovers will find plenty to enjoy on Graham Central Station. ~ Donald A.
