Lately the world reggae media has awoken to Jamaican bands such as Dubtonic Kru, Uprising Band and Raging Fyah. But there is another set of players who've been on the scene for almost as long as the Kru and deserve a share of the spoils. C-Sharp are Edna Manley music grads who came to this writer's attention in 2006 backing Turbulence and Queen Ifrica in London and have recently worked on Bunny Rugs forthcoming solo album Time. Their own second full-lengther, The Invitation, showcases the same versatility that distinguished them on stage. Unlike many brilliant foreign backing bands who can painstakingly recreate a foundation rhythm yet lose confidence when asked to step out of the old masters’ shoes, this fearless five-piece can weld just about anything to a reggae beat – from local folk rhythms to overseas styles that may send the purists running for the hills. It's easy to hear why euro roots heads who gushed over the above groups might be more cautious here. Like Third World on current album Patriots, C Sharp play an uptown, cosmopolitan highly-polished progressive roots fusion (Bunny himself even shows up to sing a few bars). Treated vocals and blazing rock guitars abound - which will lead some commentators to dismiss them out of hand. Guest producers and arrangers include Clive Hunt and Dean Fraser, and much of the record has the same pop-tastic “we are the world” balladeering flavour as the latter’s work with Tarrus Riley. It's so smooth, multilayered, and lovingly-produced that you could almost call it "yacht roots", after the radio-friendly brand of late 1970s and 80s adult oriented rock. But for those with minds as open as the musicians themselves, there is real creativity here. The interplay between frontman Chevaughn Clayton’s and the other players lead vocals recalls Morgan Heritage. The lyrics run the gamut from harsh reality (opener Family Man, written by the equally eclectic polymath Sean Michael Harris) to uplifting romance (the beautifully harmonized Missing Peace). The dancehall title track featuring Busy Signal (and what sounds like Autotune AND a vocoder) could easily have been included on his second album Loaded. There's a "Reggae Gone Country" cover of Heptones’ Book Of Rules and keyboardist Dwain Wiya Campbell’s dreamy take on John Legend's Get Lifted. And there is straight one-drop: the sultry, cautionary Jezebel and the Hunt-helmed, horn-drenched, Dennis, Tosh and Gregory name-checking Reggae My Song that leave the group’s lineage back to the foundation in no doubt. Clayton admits the sound is experimental – and not all of it will please everyone all the time. So if you are a purist who judges reggae solely by how closely it conforms to the old days, this is an invitation you may not want to accept. If, however, you like hearing reggae’s adaptability tested to the full, and enjoy latter-day Third World, Morgan Heritage and Busy, these well-penned, powerfully-played songs prove that "real reggae" (whatever that means) can exist in Jamaica in many forms. --Angus Taylor, Reggaeville.com
