Some of the interviews and press released in support of Anthony Hamilton's first RCA album (and sixth overall) were slightly misleading. Some readers might have been led to believe that Back to Love would offer a significant break from Hamilton’s past work; the singer noted that he did not want to be pigeonholed as “the sad cat,” that he was “ready to have some fun.” Hamilton even talked about “taking things to the next level.” Hamilton’s previous release, 2008’s The Point of It All, was as creative as any of his albums that came before it, and it had the higher first-week sales of than any of his other albums -- remarkable feats for a veteran, Grammy-winning artist. Regardless, Back to Love is clearly viewed as a fresh start, even though it offers no more surprises than Ain’t Nobody Worryin’ or The Point of It All. The lineup of collaborators is no shock, either, though longtime associate Mark Batson was not involved, and Babyface assists on three songs. Familiar names, including Salaam Remi, Kelvin Wooten, and Mike City, are more numerous than new ones. That Back to Love is not a major shake-up is not a bad thing. Most of the songs are instantly ingratiating in some way, with none of the lighter, upbeat numbers -- including the strutting, midtempo Southern soul of “Woo” and the thematically “Cool”-like blue-collar love song “Best of Me” -- the least bit out of character. There are some “sad cat” moments that come very close to the standard Hamilton set with the instant classic “Charlene,” led by the hushed “Life Has a Way” (produced and co-written by James Poyser), where the singer shuffles easily, if wearily, into that Bill Withers level of chilling relatability: “And my children still look up to me while their stomachs on empty/Oh, I need an angel to fall on me now.” The way the song weaves Hamilton’s raw, broken-spirited croon and spectral, multi-tracked melody is kind of crushing. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move -- Brubeck's record company wasn't keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz's rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond's ubiquitous "Take Five," Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. That's a testament to Brubeck and Desmond's abilities as composers, because Time Out is full of challenges both subtle and overt -- it's just that they're not jarring. Brubeck's classic "Blue Rondo à la Turk" blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while "Take Five," despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond's solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello's drum solo bends time without getting lost. The other selections are richly melodic as well, and even when the meters are even, the group sets up shifting polyrhythmic counterpoints that nod to African and Eastern musics. Some have come to disdain Time Out as its become increasingly synonymous with upscale coffeehouse ambience, but as someone once said of Shakespeare, it's really very good in spite of the people who like it. It doesn't just sound sophisticated -- it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it's amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. The jazz-soul-funk trio's first album away from Blue Note since its early indie days, and only studio release of fresh material since 2002, is another classy old-school-inspired concoction. Guest vocalists pepper the set as Ivan Neville, Corey Glover, Reggie Watts, and especially Chaka Khan serve up their soulful best on about half of the album's tracks, with the rest dedicated to the instrumental '60s and early-'70s-styled funk jams the band is known for. Except for a not terribly innovative but energetic -- even frantic -- cover of Hendrix's "Crosstown Traffic" with guest Robert Randolph, the disc boasts all original compositions. Most work well, but they sound like you've heard them before, maybe with a different title 30 years ago. "Freedom" in particular veers too closely to the Isley Brothers' "That Lady," blurring the line between inspiration and replication. Guitarist Eric Krasno's "Vapor" seems like it was grabbed from a John Scofield funk album and, for those old enough to remember, Chaka Khan's turn on "Back Again" can't help but be reminiscent of any number of Rufus tunes, right down to the double-tracked vocals. None of this is a deal breaker, though, because the bandmembers clearly have their hearts in the right place, shuffling through their musty albums like a deck of cards and landing on an ace more often than not. Those who come from the Crusaders era of jazz-funk will have no problem warming up to any of this, and when Ivan Neville kicks up his best Sly Stone on "Got Soul," it's nearly impossible to ignore the spirit -- just shake your hips and go with the flow. They're not reinventing the wheel, but the bandmembers' refreshing refusal to pander to a hip-hop audience by hiring a guest MC is not just commendable, it's unique. About the only concession the band makes to contemporary electronics is adding a few drum loops and distorting Cochemea Gastelum's rubbery alto sax on "Glad ta Know Ya," but even that sounds retro in its own way. Despite its title, the album is no breakout for the threesome, but it reinforces Soulive's groovalishious talents and remains a stimulating listen for established fans. ~ Hal Horowitz, All Music Guide

Sun Ra had only been heading his Arkestra for a couple of years when they recorded the 12 songs featured on this 1956 session. But while the arrangements, ensemble work, and solos are not as ambitious, expansive, or free-wheeling as they became on later outings, the groundwork was laid on such cuts as "India," "Sunology," and one of the first versions of "Blues at Midnight." Ra's band already had the essential swinging quality and first-class soloists, and he had gradually challenged them with compositions that did not rely on conventional hard bop riffs, chord changes, and structure but demanded a personalized approach and understanding of sound and rhythm far beyond standard thinking. You can hear in Ra's solos and those of John Gilmore, Pat Patrick, Charles Davis, and others an emerging freedom and looseness which would explode in the future. Никакого редактирования, способного отрицательно сказаться на качестве звучания материала НЕ ПРИМЕНЯЛОСЬ!
 
Скомпиллировано "non-stop", пауз нет, треки плавно переходят друг в друга.
 
Что-то не могу придумать хорошую тему для нового сборника )) Решил просто собрать хорошей, качественной музыки. В большинстве своём - джаз с аудиофильских лейблов. Признаюсь честно - с выбором слишком особо не заморачивался (просто в течении нескольких месяцев интересные композиции складывал в папочку "на всякий пожарный"). Но, тем не менее, сборник получился отличным, гармоничным и совсем не нудным - довольно разноплановым по стилистике и саунду. Немало треков с одним из моих любимейших по звучанию инструментов - акустической гитарой. Разумеется, только акустические, живые инструменты и никакого программирования в этом сборнике! Довольно интересен 10-й трек с еврейскими мотивами - музыканты часто у них просто виртуозы встречаются, кларнет там просто отличный. "Полёт дракона" (№5) - какой-то китайский народный духовой инструмент в сопровождении симфонического оркестра - просто волшебно, очень приятно звучит. Заканчивает сборник софт-роковая композиция, тоже очень красивая. Как и сборник вцелом ))
