Spam is evil, spam is intrusive and spam is wrong! Everyone agrees. There are so many ways of fighting against spam, some being more effective than others. As much as I love SpamAssasin, I still don't want that huge extra traffic flooding the network, no matter whether it reaches my inbox or not! Besides, I mostly keep receiving MIME messages, that I just can't view on the command line and go figure if it has any unsubscribe instructions. Do I really need to go through the hassle of unsubscribing even though I had never subscribed? Some spams don't even have unsubscribe instructions. So I felt like taking a decisive action! TopOffers@Topica.com somehow got one of my email addresses, I don't even know how, and keeps spamming me with MIME emails. I was at the end of my rope already (bad day), and this SPAM was just enough. I rolled a simple script, and installed it through Exim's "pipe" command. All this script does is, if it receives any more emails from TopOffers@Topica.com again, it sends 1,000 replies to them with my message, followed by all the bulky content of the original message. Why? To flood the server, hoping it will bring them down, and unsubscribe me from their mailings themselves. Sending me their "invaluable offers" wouldn't be in there best interest now, would it? If it doesn't stop too soon, I would have to increase the number of emails to 10,000. I know I can handle it, let's see if they can. If other people join my fight, there will be no other SPAMer, and the Net will be a peaceful place again. Well, I know I have already started this brutal fight against SPAM, but after I pulled myself together, I'm thinking now, can I expect it to be effective? What if it introduces more problems? Right now I am alone, will I be ready if they start flooding me in return - fighting back? Do I really need this? |
