Here in Manhattan after some research and possibly a bribe you can rent a studio for about $1200-1300, but that would be a dump; more or less decent apartments start from 2 grands. Of course, there is always Brooklyn with $600 basements, but if you came from, say, downtown Moscow, it will take you enormous amount of time and effort to get used to it and its habitat.
As to my apartment, I live in midtown west, two blocks from the Times Square, in 45-story 2-tower building with 24/7 security and underground parking, on 28th Floor with a private terrace, building amenities include gym, pool, climbing wall and tennis courts but all that for extra money. The building itself is pretty average, very middle class, although does have a history - popular american show "Seinfield" was written here and around it. That's about it.
