Does Ghost work with GPT partition tables?

Issue

Does Ghost work with GPT partition tables?

Environment
A GUID Partition Table (GPT) is part of the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) standard introduced to replace the Basic Input Output System (BIOS). It was initially introduced for Itanium servers only, but is becoming more commonly used in other platforms.

Cause

The GPT supports up to 128 partitions and uses a false Master Boot Record (MBR) with only one entry that points at the GPT. This is for legacy compatibility reasons.

Because the Ghost virtual partition replaces the MBR with it's own version, it will cause problems with systems that use a GPT.

Solution

Ghost 11.5 is capable of imaging partitions that are defined in a GPT:

If you want to use Ghost to image a system with this partition table type, here is some information to consider:

  • You cannot use the Ghost Console Client or any method that uses our Virtual Partition.  Use boot media that connects to the Ghost Cast Server. For more information on how to create boot media and join a Ghost Cast Server session, see the document How to get started in Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 with Boot Disks and the Ghostcast Server.
  • Create your boot disk using a WinPE Pre-OS.
  • You may need to include the -IB switch which captures the entire Boot Track in your Ghost command line when capturing an image. For more information on sector switches, see the document Switches: Sector Copy.
  • You may need to include the -FDSP switch to restore the image so that the original disk signature that includes information such as drive letters is preserved.
  • If all of the above fail to capture/restore a working image, you may need to use the -IA, -ID or -IR switch when you capture the image. These switches would create sector image copies and would include all of the blank space on the drive.  These sector Images can only be restored to the same size or larger hard drive. For more information about sector switches, see the document Switches: Sector Copy.
