1. How to prepare Imagus for work?

Install Imagus Mod (recommended) or Imagus.
Go to the extension settings and set the parameters on the "Settings" tab, as shown in the screenshot. Don't forget to check the "Advanced" box so that all the settings are available to you. The settings are shown by default for Imagus Mod, in the case of Imagus everything is the same, only some items are missing. And this is an example of hotkey settings ("Shortcuts" tab) for Imagus Mod. Imagus has many items missing on this tab, or they cannot be changed.
For Imagus Mod, you will need to additionally enable file download permission on the "Shortcuts" tab - without it, saving images and videos will not be available.
(These are the recommended settings that have been tested in working with our rule-set. In the future, having gained experience, you can change them according to your tastes and needs).
Install SMH (Simple Mod Headers): Chrome | Firefox and enable it (the icon should turn green).
Import new sieves for Imagus & rules for SMH: SIEVES. For Imagus Mod, updating sieves is available by simply clicking on the "Update sieves" button. The main thing is not to forget to delete old sieves before updating, and after updating - click the big "Save" button (on the right).
Restart the browser.

2. How to import one or all sieves from a FILE.

Download and unpack the archive with sieves - we need a file with the JSON extension.
In Imagus Settings, go to the "Sieves" tab.
Click the "Import" button (single down arrow).
Check the "Clear data before importing" before import option. All existing sieves will be removed, and then sieves from the file will be added.
Click the "From file" button, select the previously downloaded file on disk.
The imported sieves should appear on the "Sieves" tab.
On the right, click the "Save" button.
Exit the Settings and reload the page.

When you import ALL the rules (for example, the next update of our rule-set), you should check the option "Delete data before importing". And when you import ONE rule, if a rule with that name already exists, you need to mark another option - "Replace existing data". If this is a new rule, then you don't need to mark anything.

Importing ALL sieves is very easy. Importing ONE rule is a bit more difficult, because if there is an old rule (which needs to be replaced), then you need to make sure that it is exactly deleted. It happens that the names of the old and new sieves are different, in this case the "Replace existing data" option will not help, and after importing the new sieve, the old one will also remain in place. In this case, it should be found and removed manually.

NB! For those who have their own sieves and need to save them / for those who have their own custom rule-set:

To prevent the removal of your custom sieves when importing, you need to first export them (all or separately) - and only after that do the update. After importing our rule-set, you can add your custom sieves. And this will have to be done every time our rule-set is updated.

There is also an opportunity for those who have their custom rule-set - it is more convenient for them to import/replace sieves manually, to choose from, from the catalog "Separately". At the same time, all other sieves in your rule-set will remain intact. You cannot use the "Update sieve" button with such a "selective" update.

3. How to import a sieve from JSON-code.

For example, add the sieve:

In Imagus Settings, go to the "Sieves" tab.
Click the "Import" button (single down arrow).
Mark the "Replace existing data" option (in the case when it is necessary to replace the old sieve with a new one).
Insert the sieve text into the input field {"B_parovoz.com": {"img" ...}.
Click the "From text" button.
The new sieve should appear in the upper left corner in the Sieves tab.
Сlick the "Save" button.
Exit the Settings and reload the page.

4. How to select / disable / delete / export / rename sieves.

Before enabling/disabling, deleting or exporting a sieve, you must select it. You can select a specific sieve in Imagus in the same way as a file in Explorer - CTRL + LMB. If you need to select several sieves, hold down CTRL and select as many as needed. The highlighted sieve has a slightly darkened background/gradient (compared to the unselected ones). In alternative styles of Settings (see point 16 of the FAQ), it stands out with a clearly distinguishable blue background.

- Remove selected/all sieves - button [-] ("Remove all or selected")

- Disable selected/all sieves - button [crossed out circle] ("Disable/enable all or selected")

When the sieve is turned off, the font is red. In alternative styles of Settings, it has a well-distinguishable "pink" background.

- Export selected/all sieves - button [up arrow] ("Export all or selected")

As follows from the names of these buttons, if ANYTHING is not selected, then the action is performed with ALL sieves (ALL sieves are selected/deleted/exported). So be careful. If you accidentally deleted all sieves, but SAVE button has not yet been pressed, you can simply exit Settings, changes will not be saved.

Renaming:
SHIFT + RMB on the sieve name. Press ENTER to save the rename. Cancellation of changes - ESC.

After ANY operations with sieves, you need to press the SAVE button.

5. Basic rules for creating sieves.

Pretty much everything you need to know is regular expressions (and some JavaScript and HTML).

Options:

link: regular expression; works with the "href" attribute of the link (A tag).

url: replacement; is only meaningful when the next parameter "res" is specified. Generates a URL for "res" if something other than a link or image url is required.

res: regular expression; if there is no way to get the url of the enlarged image using the "link" or "img" parameters, then the page is loaded in the background (if the "url" parameter is not specified, then the link or image addresses will be used, otherwise - the replacement from "url "), and its contents are searched for a match to the image address.

img: regular expression; for the "src" attribute of the IMG tag, or style = "background-image: url (thumbnail_address)" for any element.

to: [multiple] replacement or function; the link or image url will be replaced with this expression applied to the "link" or "img" values.

If the "res" parameter is specified, then you do not need to specify anything in "to", the contents of the first group of brackets "()" are automatically returned there.

Options:

Loop: double-check the result, for example, a link in Google Pictures may point to a thumbnail from Twitter, then when you turn on the loop for Google Pictures, the recognized Twitter thumbnail will be processed again, and thus an enlarged image will be obtained.

DecodeURL: Some providers, like Bing, Yandex, put the encoded image address as a parameter in the URL.

Prioritize img over link: If both "link" or "res" and "img" are specified, then "img" will be preferred.

The rules are not site-specific, so all rules will be checked on any site when you hover the mouse over a link or an object such as a thumbnail. If the "link" parameter is not specified or no match is found and "img" is present, then "img" will be used for the link address as well (in the case of thumbnail links), so there is no need to set the same value for "link" and "img" , one "img" is enough (implemented in v0.8.10).

6. If Imagus does not work on a specific site.

"On my favorite site, the images are not enlarged!"

Imagus handles some sites on its own, but there are many sites that require a sieve.
If Imagus does not work and there is no rule for it (Settings - Sieves - Search), then this site is not supported. You can request the creation of a rule on this forum (Russian) or in the Imagus community on Reddit (English).
We also draw your attention to the fact that everything in our community is done on a voluntary basis, so creating a rule specifically for you is not guaranteed. It depends on the desire and availability of free time from specialists, as well as on the degree of popularity and demand for the site itself. In addition, there are cases when the creation of a rule is not possible for technical reasons or because of commercial restrictions (OnlyFans, Patreon etc.).

7. About the benefits of the "Note" section in the sieve itself.

Each sieve has a "Note" field (the lowest one), which necessarily contains information about the author of the sieve and a link to the post with the sieve code, and also often contains useful information about its correct and optimal use.

It will help you learn about additional sieve features that you may not even have suspected, as well as solve problems with it (for example, when the sieve does not work, or does not work as you expected).

8. What do the different colors of the loading indicator (spinner) mean?

NB: In rare cases, the color of the indicator can be distorted by the external style of the page (for example, when using the Stylish/Stylus/Stylebot extensions, etc.), therefore, in cases where there are doubts about the color of the spinner, it is better to temporarily disable external styles.

Norm:
====

GREEN
The page is parsed to obtain a link to the media file (s).

WHITE
The media file started loading.

NB: If the media file has not been loaded yet, but the spinner is still white, then it makes sense to wait (within reasonable limits, for example, 60-120 seconds).

Crash/Error:
========

RED
Failed to load media file (not found, server not available, invalid media format ...).

YELLOW
Failure to parse the page or reasons similar to "RED".

GRAY
JavaScript error in the rule.

NB: If the spinner has changed its color to RED/YELLOW/GRAY, then there is no point in waiting, waiting will bring nothing.

9. Whitelist / Blacklist.

Options > Grants > Press "Details button" and read the instruction. After making changes - don't forget to click the "Save" button.
NB! On Chromium browsers in Imagus mod, there may be problems with the use of certain prohibitions.

10. Wrap heading text.

"Long titles go off the edge of the screen..."

You can enable title/text wrapping in Settings, or, more conveniently, set up a special hotkey ("C" - default key). The title text can also be copied - hold down the "Ctrl" key and press the key "C" twice.

11. A sieves for YouTube.

At the moment there are 4 sieves for YouTube in our rule-set:

- YOUTUBE - main sieve. YouTube_redirect, YouTube_clip_redirect, GoogleContent|YouTube_Gallery - auxiliary sieves.

- YOUTUBE shows by default the video cover first, then the video in 720p resolution, and then the video in a lower resolution (original YouTube player). Switching modes occurs with the mouse wheel, according to the album principle (to do this, in Settings you need to enable the “Scroll album with the mouse wheel” option).

Selecting parameters in the sieve:

Depending on what you need, you can swap the order of the elements (third sieve section from the top, //config options):

You can also remove the element altogether by substituting the value "no" instead of the number. For example, in this configuration the sieve will show only the cover:

Other settings:

- useSidebar: true - shows the information panel (sidebar) to the left of the thumbnail or video (requires either thumbVideoInfo, nativeVideoInfo, or both to be set to true)
- returnDislikes: true - loads dislikes and ratings from ReturnYouTubeDislike.com
- useSmallerThumbnail: true - use lower resolution thumbnail
- lowResFirst: true - native player shows 360p video, toggle resolution with TAB
- thumbVideoInfo: true - display sidebar or detailed caption on thumbnail
- nativeVideoInfo: true - display sidebar or detailed caption on native player

- disable_on_thumbs
It is also possible to disable Imagus on thumbnails (covers) of videos. In this case, the sieve will be activated only when the cursor hovers over the name of the video. To do this, set the value to true as shown in the screenshot.

- disable_on_links
For those who do not need a sieve to interfere with the display of a YouTube note with the full title of the video, it is possible to completely disable the sieve on the names of the videos. To do this, set the value to true as shown in the screenshot. At the same time, this parameter disables the sieve on external links.

- disable_on_iframe

After all changes have been made, you must click the "Save" button.

NB: Remember that all the changes you have made to the sieve options will have to be made again after the next update!

It is recommended to hover the cursor over the title of the video. It doesn’t always work on covers (or not the first time).

- For more reliable operation, it is recommended to install the extension uBO (uBlock Origin) and filters for it ("My Filters" tab):

- In the Imagus to rewind the video (in the "zoom" mode), you can use the keyboard shortcut CTRL+RIGHT/CTRL+LEFT. In the Imagus Mod you can assign any keys, for example the usual ones RIGHT/LEFT.

- The sieve also works on external links - but Chromium browsers require the installation of the SMH extension and its rules (see FAQ, p.12).

12. About the need to install the SMH (Simple-Modify-Headers) extension.

For the correct work of Imagus sieves on some sites, a change in the referer is required. Accordingly, in addition to Imagus itself, you need to install another extension - SMH.

version for Chrome and Chromium based browsers
version for FireFox

At the moment, referrer changes are required for many sites including YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, TikTok, Twitter, Pixiv, Tumblr, RedGifs and many others.

The list of rules is updated in the same way as the list of sieves - as rules are added/removed.
The current list of rules for SMH can be downloaded in one file with sieve updates (permalink in the SIEVES in the topic header).
NB! Before importing (the "Import" button), all our old rules should be removed. Those who have their own rules for SMH can add our new rules using the "Append" button.

13. About the need to install the uBO (uBlock Origin) extension.

At the moment, the installation of the uBO extension is necessary for the full operation of Imagus on the following sites:

csfd.cz +csfd.sk (for viewing galleries)
doujins.com (to work on the album page)
YouTube.com (for more reliable operation of the sieve for some users)

The rules for uBO themselves can be found in the notes to the corresponding sieves of the same name (Settings - Sieves - Search sieve - see "note").

14. Instruction for replacing the update address.

NB: In Imagus Mod 0.10.15 (Chrome | Firefox), which we recommend to install instead of the outdated Imagus, there is no need to replace the address.

Only for Chromium-based browsers users!

The standard sieves update (Settings - Sieves - "Update Sieves" button [double down arrow]) still works, but you can't use it anymore!

The author has stopped supporting the extension and sieves for it, so when this button is clicked, a long-outdated set of rules is loaded. If they are already loaded after (re)extension installations - they must be deleted (Settings - Sieves - button [-] "Delete all or selected" - Save) and only after that import our sieves. Another way to remove old or accidentally loaded sieves - when importing a file with new sieves check the box "Clear the data before importing".

1. Go to the "Info" tab on the extension settings page.
2. Click the "Import" button (arrow down).
3. Select the "Delete data before import" checkbox.
4. Insert the following line into the text field:

5. Click the "From text" button.
6. Click the "Save" button.
7. Exit the Settings and then re-enter the Settings.
8. Go to the "Sieves" tab, click the "Update Sieves" button (double downward arrow), then "OK" in the pop-up window.
9. Click the "Save" button.

NB! Before importing, all old sieves (rules) must be deleted (Settings - Sieves - "Delete all or selected" button - "Save" button). Sometimes the import of sieves via the "Update sieves" button is "buggy" (the number of sieves is more than it should be). Then you need to not just delete the sieves and click the "Save" button, but also exit the Imagus Settings, go back to them and only then click the "Update sieves" and "Save" buttons.

UPD
According to some users, the update process is hanging on some browsers (hanging in the status "Download ..."). First of all, it is recommended to delete all the old sieves and click "Save" (for greater reliability on some browsers, it is also recommended to exit the Settings and log in to them again). After that, click the "Update sieves" button again. If the problem still persists, it means something with hosting (Github) and you just need to wait and update the sieves a little later.

15. How to use full zoom in Imagus.

After a pop-up window with a photo or video appears, right-click on it (or use a long press - this is selected in the Settings), and then you can zoom in/out using the mouse wheel. By moving the cursor, you decide the focus along with it (i.e. you can zoom in exactly at the place of the image that you need).

16. Who is the developer of the sieve?

The developer is listed in the sieve in the first line of its "notes" section. There is also a link to the original sieve (where it was published). If the developer is not specified, then this is a sieve from the author of Imagus (as a rule, these are the oldest sieves, they are at the end of the list on the Filters tab and do not have a prefix).

17. A sieves for Reddit.

By default, the sieves for Reddit are configured to be used in with the player [Extension], built into our rule-set. This makes it possible to view HLS videos on Reddit with sound and best quality.

But this player does not have the ability to save videos (for this it is better to use special programs for downloading videos, for example IDM - Internet Download Manager).

To return to using the standard browser player, which has no sound on Reddit and worse quality (mp4), but there are no problems with saving videos, you just need to disable the Old rule.Reddit_v.redd.it.

About the inability to save the video in the HLS/DASH format

In some cases the cursor should be placed on the whole block with the post (when you hover over it, it slightly stands out with a different background), not on the link or thumbnail - it's a feature of the new Reddit design.

To view the HLS-video, the parameter "Show caption text" must always be enabled in the Settings ([Extension] sieve restriction).

-b (bad) - faulty sieves (at the moment)

19. Imagus Mod

Version for Chromium | Version for FireFox

The current version of Imagus Mod at the moment: 0.10.15. Pre-release 0.10.16 contains bugs and is not recommended for installation.

Why Imagus Mod is missing on CWS (Chrome Web Store) - the answer from the author.

How to install Imagus Mod in Chromium-browsers that support installation not only from CWS:

- Unpack ZIP (you will get a directory with files)
- Go to "Manage extensions";
- Enable "Developer Mode" (if it is disabled);
- Click "Pack extension";
- In the directory selection dialog, go to the folder of the unpacked directory and click "Pack extension" + OK;
- The browser will create a CRX. You only need this CRX - the directory itself, the ZIP and the file with the PEM extension can be deleted;
- Make a copy of CRX (some browsers delete the CRX file immediately after installation);
- Drag the CRX to an open browser page, preferably in the "Extensions Management".

How to install Imagus Mod in Chrome/Brave/Edge:

Download Imagus Mod in ZIP, unzip it to your browser folder (for example, like this), then Settings - Manage Extensions - enable "Developer Mode" (if disabled) - "Load unpacked".

If Chrome or Chromium browser writes that the extension is "installed with errors" - this is normal.

20. Own sieve rule-sets.

For those users who do not need all 800 rules (sieves) from our rule-set, as well as for those who have many sieves with individual settings (some sieves have the possibility of additional settings), in order not to lose their own settings and rule-sets, when updating, it is possible to update not all rule-set, but only those sieves that have been added/changed. For this purpose, the archive contains the Separately catalog with separate sieves.

21. Error "Connection is not private" (for sites with HTTP instead of HTTPS).

For Chrome:
Browser Settings - Privacy and Security - Allow sites to show unsafe content:

Settings - Privacy and Protection - «HTTPS Only mode» - Exception Management.
To choose from:
"Don’t enable HTTPS-Only Mode" or "Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in all windows" + add sites to exceptions.

Then restart the page.

22. About the suspension of support for Imagus by the developer.

At the moment the development of both Imagus itself and sieves for it by the author (Deathamns / snmahtaeD) has been stopped (perhaps finally), you can read about the reasons here.
However, there are no serious reasons for concern yet. The extension continues to be fully functional. The extension has the best interface and functionality among analogs, as well as the largest set of relevant sieves for websites. For this reason, the author did not (yet?) remove it from the CWS (Chrome Web Store) and Firefox Addons.

In addition, in May 2023, the development of Imagus Mod (Chrome | Firefox) began, currently it is already a fully functional alternative to Imagus with many improvements and functionality that is not available in Imagus. Therefore, we recommend installing Imagus Mod.

Sieves for Imagus are regularly updated and checked for relevance by our group (major sieve developers: 64h, Baton34V, gpl2731, hababr, Imagus_fan, imqswt).
