SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario:
You have a client computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.
There is more than one drive on the client computer.
One of the drives is an encrypted drive.
The free space on the encrypted drive is larger than the free space on the nonencrypted drive or drives.
You apply a software update to the client computer.
In this scenario, the software update installation fails. Additionally, the client computer may crash.

CAUSE
When you apply a software update to a client computer, the client computer executes a scan of both the internal and external hard disk drives. The scan identifies the largest available free disk space. If the largest available free disk space is located on an encrypted drive, a temporary directory is created on the encrypted drive. Then, the software update installation files are extracted to the temporary directory under a system account. However, the encrypted drive is set up under user credentials. Therefore, the installation files are encrypted, and cannot be used to install the update. In this situation, the software update installation fails.
