An international superstar right out of the gate in 2007, Leona Lewis didn't fare quite so well with her second album, Echo, in 2009. It did indeed sound like a faded echo of Spirit, containing much of the same glassy soul and balladry as Lewis' 2007 album, but lacking a single as galvanizing as "Bleeding Love." Echo's underperformance meant there was a lot riding on her third album, Glassheart, and it took a while for the singer to finish the record, with the album experiencing almost a year's worth of delays before finally appearing in Europe in the autumn of 2012. Glassheart certainly intends to take risks Lewis studiously avoided on Echo. Ryan Tedder, author and producer of "Bleeding Love," is back on board, but overall there's a distinct shift toward dance, with Lewis even flirting with dubstep on occasion. Tedder's chilly love songs are a good match for this change of direction, but his presence also underlines that even with all the electronic window dressing, Lewis hasn't changed much: she's still singing sky-scraping pop designed to showcase her diva range. Sonically, there's more going on here -- more interesting textures and rhythms -- and Lewis navigates the sometimes elliptical contours of the melodies with ease, but all this is sound and fury: beneath it all, there aren't songs or even individual hooks to pull a listener in. 1982 will forever be known as the year that the punks got class -- or at least when Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello, rivals for the title of Britain's reigning Angry Young Man -- decided that they were not just rockers, but really songwriters in the Tin Pan Alley tradition. (Graham Parker, fellow angry Brit, sat this battle out, choosing to work with Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas instead.) Both had been genre-hopping prior to 1982, but Jackson's Night and Day and Costello's Imperial Bedroom announced to the world that both were "serious songwriters," standing far apart from the clamoring punkers and silly new wavers. In retrospect, the ambitions of these two 27-year-olds (both born in August 1954, just two weeks apart) seem a little grandiose, and if Imperial Bedroom didn't live up to its masterpiece marketing campaign (stalling at number 30 on the charts without generating a hit), it has garnered a stronger reputation than Night and Day, which was a much more popular album, climbing all the way to number four on the U.S. charts, thanks to the Top Ten single "Steppin' Out." Night and Day had greater success because it's sleek and bright, entirely more accessible than the dense, occasionally unwieldy darkness of Imperial Bedroom. Plus, Jackson plays up the comparisons to classic pop songwriting by lifting his album title from Cole Porter, dividing the record into a "night" and "day" side, and then topping it off with a neat line drawing of him at his piano in a New York apartment on the cover. All of these classy trappings are apparent on the surface, which is the problem with the record: it's all stylized, with the feel eclipsing the writing, which is kind of ironic considering that Jackson so clearly strives to be a sophisticated cosmopolitan songwriter here. He gets the cosmopolitan, big-city feel down pat; although the record never delivers on the "night" and "day" split, with the latter side feeling every bit as nocturnal as the former, his blend of percolating Latin rhythms, jazzy horns and pianos, stylish synths, and splashy pop melodies uncannily feel like a bustling, glitzy evening in the big city. On that front, Night and Day is a success, since it creates a mood and sustains it very well. Where it lets down is the substance of the songs. At a mere nine tracks, it's a brief album even by 1982 standards, and it seems even shorter because about half the numbers are more about sound than song. "A Slow Song" gets by on its form, not what it says, while "Target" and "Cancer" are swinging Latin-flavored jams that disappear into the air. "Chinatown" is a novelty pastiche that's slightly off-key, but nowhere near as irritating as "T.V. Age," where Jackson mimics David Byrne's hyper-manic vocal mannerisms. These all fit the concept of the LP and they're engaging on record, but they're slight, especially given Jackson's overarching ambition -- and their flimsiness is brought into sharp relief by the remaining four songs, which are among Jackson's very best. There is, of course, the breakthrough hit "Steppin' Out," which pulsates anticipatory excitement, but the aching "Breaking Us in Two" is just as good, as is the haunting "Real Men" and the album opener, "Another World," a vibrant, multi-colored song that perfectly sets up the sonic and lyrical themes of the album. If all of Night and Day played at this level, it would be the self-styled masterpiece Joe Jackson intended it to be. Instead, it is a very good record that delivers some nice, stylish pleasures; but its shortcomings reveal precisely how difficult it is to follow in the tradition of Porter and Gershwin. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Sade’s longest absence yet did not prevent their return from being an event. It at least seemed eventful whenever “Soldier of Love,” released to radio a couple months prior to the album of the same title, was heard over the airwaves. Even with its brilliantly placed lyrical allusions to hip-hop past and present and its mature sound, the single stuck out on stations aimed at teens and twentysomethings, as well as points on the dial that court an older audience. It was the most musical and organic, while also the most dramatic yet least bombastic, song in rotation. Crisp snare rolls, cold guitar stabs, and at least a dozen other elements were deployed with tremendous economy, suspensefully ricocheting off one another as Sade Adu rewrote “Love Is a Battlefield” with scarred, assured defiance. While the song was an indication of its parent album’s reliance upon organic instrumentation — the band’s use of synthesized textures and programming is greatly diminished — it merely hinted at the dark, even fatalist, depth of heartache conveyed throughout the set. On “Bring Me Home,” Adu is content in resignation (“Send me to slaughter/Lay me on the railway line”), while on “The Moon and the Sky,” she projects a bruised and angered bewilderment (“You lay me down and left me for the lions”). The focus at least switches temporarily to a loved one on “In Another Time,” in what resembles a love letter to (what is likely) a young daughter mistreated by members of both sexes (“Their whispers are hailstones in your face”; “Soon they’ll mean nothing to you”). Although the bleakness is tempered with themes of survival and recovery, and (just) one song that is truly sweet (“Babyfather”), a fair portion of the album’s lyrical content comes off as drained-sounding, only echoed with vanilla arrangements that are merely functional, restrained to a fault, greatly outstripped by “Soldier of Love.” Lacking rhythmic hypnotism and relatable most to those who are experiencing solitude created by romantic desertion, this is not your mother's Sade album. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Никакого редактирования, способного отрицательно сказаться на качестве звучания материала НЕ ПРИМЕНЯЛОСЬ!
 
Скомпиллировано "non-stop", пауз нет, треки плавно переходят друг в друга.
 
Ну вот добрался и до дабстепа... Довольно противоречивый стиль, далеко не для всех слушателей, один из самых тяжёлых не только в электронной музыке, но и в музыке вообще - я бы так сказал. Разумеется, любителям джаза и классики этот сборник наверняка будет просто не интересен, но ради эксперимента вполне можно ознакомиться. Слушать дабстеп просто необходимо на аппаратуре, которая позволяет воспроизводить полноценный низ звукового спектра. Желательно прослушивать на большой громкости, чтобы до конца прочувствовать все прелести этого стиля - мощь, напор. Когда от громкости мухи на лету дохнут, вытряхивает мозг и душу, выворачивает наизнанку все внутренности - тогда кайф можно получить приличный. На "аудиопукалках" типа бумбоксов и иже с ними начинать ознакамливаться со стилем "дабстеп" просто не имеет никакого смысла, так как собственно та самая музыкальная информация - мелодия и гармония - там далеко не на переднем плане. Зато в избытке есть ритм и "кач"! Совсем не помешает в это время находиться в центре звуковой стереокартинки - часто от разнообразия и глубины звуковых эффектов просто подбрасывает и "сносят крышу"! Этот сборник составил из треков, выбранных более чем из 11 Гб "дабстепного" материала на свой вкус. Сам поклонником данного стиля не являюсь, но думаю, что вещи подобрал отличные. Ибо самому сборник доставляет удовольствие. Эта компиляция, наверно, здорово подойдёт для прослушивания в авто на большой скорости. Продемонстрировать кому-нибудь мощность своей аудиосистемы - лучше не придумаешь. Закончил сборку довольно известной песней Alex Clare - Too Close - её довольно продолжительное время можно было слышать в какой-то рекламе по телевидению, не помню сейчас какой именно. Услышав эту песню, в общем-то, составить этот сборник я и задумал уже довольно давно...
