In 1978 Alan Menken and Howard Ashman created a new musical take on Roger Corman's 1960 film Little Shop Of Horrors, which became a Broadway hit. Both involve a man-eating, Venus flytrap-inspired plant named Audrey II, raised in a skid-row flower shop into a massive beast with excessive chloroplast (testosterone?) levels. Though the film was inventive and campy, Menken and Ashman's music music - a mix of doo-wop and lavish songs along the lines of Rocky Horror Picture Show -- made the show's fun hilarious, its thrills outrageously gruesome. The soundtrack to Frank Oz's 1987 film adaptation carries on the musical's spirit: Steve Martin's rendition of "Dentist," about a demented psychopath who drills mouths (not just teeth) without novocaine, is achingly funny. "Downtown" is a full-powered choir of the slums; Rick Moranis works for an uptight flower shop manager ("He took me in, gave me shelter, a bed, crust of bread and a job, treats me like dirt and calls me a slob, which I am.") Martin and Moranis' sincere if limited singing is charming, and Ellen Greene returns as the original Audrey from the Broadway version; the way she belts out earth-shakingly high notes is bewildering, particularly on the lovely duet with Moranis, "Suddenly Seymour." The Four Tops' Levi Stubbs is a scene-stealer as Audrey II, particularly on the new track, the raunchy, boisterous finale "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space"; since film nominations must be new songs, it was added in hopes of an Academy Award (and did indeed receive a nomination.) When Disney added a tribute to Howard Ashman on the Beauty and the Beast credits after his death in 1992, it read: "To Ashman who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul." Any vocalist whose album release parties are held at Le Dome on Sunset Strip has got to be a class act, and R&B/jazz song stylist Reeves is certainly that. Helped along by the marvelous texturing skills of producer George Duke and the rhythms of such jazz heavies as Kirk Whalum, Luis Conte, Abe Laboriel, and Stanley Clarke, Reeves shows a grand affinity for a wide range of stylings. Her gospel side is brought out by a choir featuring Phil Perry and Philip Bailey on the feel good title cut, while Conte's snazzy percussion brings out the South African rhythms on the brassy "Fumilayo" and "Eyes on the Prize," on which Duke shows considerable aplomb with the synclavier horns. Duke also infuses some funk in the danceable "Hello (Haven't I Seen You Before)," which features backing vocals by Take 6. Best tunes are the safest ones, though -- the sweet torch ballads "More to Love," "We Belong Together," and the tearjerker "Company," which was co-written by Rickie Lee Jones. Tasty stuff, but how does Reeves sing? Powerfuly, with an emotional voice that commands your attention but doesn't feel the need to overpower. Never Too Far may be classified as an R&B album, but Reeves has the voice and soul of a true jazz diva. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide

The ever-restless Dianne Reeves tries to do something unconventional with an utterly conventional idea -- a tribute album to Sarah Vaughan -- and ends up overdoing the whole thing, though it's not really her fault. While the virtuosic Reeves often cannot resist reaching down into her chest register for some daring, earthy, Sassy-like swoops ("Key Largo" and "If You Could See Me Now" are key examples) or a daring vocalise like "A Chamada," she mostly retains her own identity in these 11 tunes, with a bright timbre that cannot be mistaken for that of Sassy. The element that does this project in are the overblown charts for a 36-piece orchestra that sounds a lot bigger and more congested than it is. Arranger/pianist Billy Childs (spelled on two tracks by Robert Freedman) is rarely content to relax and let a groove happen; he's too busy filling every conceivable space with all kinds of swirling, convoluted ideas that compete with, rather than enhance, the singer and the tunes. The one original tune on the session, "I Remember Sarah," opens with a scat chorus, then pianist Mulgrew Miller plays the blues, and Reeves does her familiar style of autobiographical rap in song. The best moment occurs when cagey veteran Clark Terry offers some jive talking in back of Reeves on "I Hadn't Anyone 'Til You" and some deliciously sly plunger mute trumpet work, fighting the orchestra all the way. Of course, it could be said that an over the top tribute to this larger than life diva is the only appropriate thing to do, but that doesn't make this session -- recorded quickly in the old manner -- any more listenable. ~ Richard S. Mosaic Records, known for its historic compilations of Blue Note recordings in either box sets or the Mosaic Select series, introduces its Contemporary line with this reissue of Earl Klugh's 1985 recording. At the least, it is a curious anomaly to all the label's other packages. At best, fans of Klugh will be happy to revisit tunes they may have only owned on vinyl. It's primarily the same syrupy orchestrations by Don Sebesky, the same lugubrious after-hours tempos, and Klugh's laid-back, mostly acoustic guitar framing movie themes, ballads, and an occasional standard. The solo acoustic takes of the swing evergreen "Ain't Misbehavin'" and an always bluesy "See See Rider" are still the standout cuts, flute beautifully leads and identifies the wondrous, poignant "Nature Boy" and "A Certain Smile," while oboe fronts the "Theme from Picnic." "Stay Gold" and "Night Song" remain sleepy, while Klugh's take on "The Look of Love" will always be a George Benson imitation. Klugh put out much better efforts, to brighter, less glossed-over effect, on his earlier Blue Note recordings. This one is not all that essential. ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide

Every time Harvey Mason  decides to record a new album he calls on a few old favours and boy it still amazes me who the Mason gang comprises of. The above looks like a ' who's who ' of the fusion jazz music industry. The musicians who didn't appear were probably on tour or on a holiday on the moon. Joining Harvey on this album too are family members Harvey Junior and Heather, who like the maestro himself, are wonderfully gifted all round musicians. 'Ratamacue' is a basic music rudiment used exclusively in drumming and who better to use this for a title for his new album than Harvey Mason. He has appeared on some 800 albums or even more during his career which even included playing with such jazz greats as Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Dave Samuels, Bob James, Ron Carter and John Scofield in Carnegie Hall back in 1974. He has been one of the most sought after session musicians for many years as well as touring with almost all of the Atlantic and GRP musicians at one time or another. His new album ' Ratamacue ' sees Harvey display his versatile talents on drums, vibes, percussion, marimba and keyboards. His album opener is a vibes led version of the Paul Desmond's classic ' Take Five ' which absolutely glides along as if the listener was in a trance. The self penned ' 8.22 A.M. ' sees Harvey joined by the melodic Bob James and the unmistakable guitar playing of Lee Ritenour on this laid back and easy drifter whilst the title track is a vibes driven speed merchant with trumpet and sax solos from Herb Alpert and Bennie Maupin. What is noticeable about this track is the syncopated use of percussion by Sheila E and Harvey. The beautiful and haunting ' Noble places of the heart ' shares the center stage honours between Harvey on vibes, Hubert Laws on flute and Paul Jackson Junior who incidentally returns the favour and invites this whole gang back to appear on his wonderful new album entitled ' Never Alone: Duets '. This masterpiece could grace the stage of any of our inner daydreams and fantasies. Harvey and son Harvey Junior wrote most of the tracks on the album including my killer cut ' Scream ' featuring the funky bass of the talented Me'Shell NdegéOchello and the brilliant playing of George Duke on keys. Ronnie Foster contributes with the Hammond B3 sound with Paul Jackson Junior on guitar. Taxi man ' Bob James ' joins the party once again for the smooth ' Whatever it is ' and shares the spotlight with Harvey on the equally beautiful ' Take it slow ' whilst Phil Perry adds his dazzling vocals to the smoocher entitled ' Crush ' ably assisted by saxman Gerald Albright. If you play poker and you were dealt a Royal Flush with every hand you can begin to realize the quality of musicianship assisting Harvey on this album. In 1978, just coming off what most Woody Shaw fanatics consider his masterpiece, 1977's Rosewood, Shaw planned on recording another studio album with a similar sound. However, after a disappointing session, Shaw thought better of his initial choice and the band regrouped for a two-night stint at New York's fabled Village Vanguard. The results were nothing short of magic as the band sounds technically and creatively inspired. Interestingly, Shaw is playing cornet here and loses nothing of his rounded, clarion bell tones. Also, given the superb production, Stepping Stones bests some other live Shaw recordings, sounding as good as a studio effort. Joining Shaw is his regular group of the time, including tenor saxophonist Carter Jefferson, pianist Onaje Allan Gumbs, bassist Clint Houston, and drummer Victor Lewis. One would be hard-pressed to find a better hardcore, post-jazz ensemble in the late '70s. To that end, the music here is soulful, cerebral, harmonically complex jazz that is the epitome of post-bop. Shaw was underappreciated while alive and still more often than not is overshadowed by the more well-known Blue Note icon trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. While Shaw was no doubt heavily influenced by Hubbard -- who was five years his senior -- Shaw nonetheless refined and pushed Hubbard's athletic and harmonically complex style. If Hubbard was the innovator, Shaw pushed those innovations as far as they could go. Few have come close to approaching his artistry and cerebral architecture and none have gone past it. Никакого редактирования, способного отрицательно сказаться на качестве звучания материала НЕ ПРИМЕНЯЛОСЬ!
 
Скомпилировано "non-stop", пауз нет, треки плавно переходят друг в друга.
 
Совершенно верно - Various Artists - разные артисты. Но тут не только артисты разные. Собирал отдельные треки, сам и не знаю толком для чего - просто чтобы какая-нибудь приятная музыка всегда была под рукой. До того хорошие вещицы подобрались, совсем "не заезженные", что вот решил сборничек состряпать ))... Единственное, чем этот сборник отличается от других "by RoNikEr" - полное наличие отсутствия тематики, чем, возможно, он может быть и интересен. Здесь есть и вокальные (как женские, так и мужские) треки. Есть инструментальная музыка. Открывает сборник довольно интересная вещица - в исполнении детского хора с солистом. Немного в таком же плане трек №5 - практически всем известная вещь, но в неизвестном широкому слушателю исполнении, которое в корне отличается от оригинала и совсем его не хуже. Очень примечательный трек №6 - григорианские напевы с электронной аранжировкой, совсем не портящей общую картинку. Ещё одна "переделка" классики - трек №9. Понравился уже давно забойно-весёлый трек №14, его можно услышать в фильме "Гитлер капут". Последний трек исполнен в паре с Адель - теперь она уже крутая )) Ну, впрочем, сами всё услышите...
