Sun наоборот открывает все свои технологии, - Solaris, Java. Sun делает свой бизнес на открытых технологиях. На эту тему есть хороший пост: Цитата: I think I can help you understand some points. 1. I thought an open source program couldn't be bought. I thought that was the point. Or if it could be bought, the last known code must remain open. And if Sun improves the code, they must make these updates open as well. I think you misunderstand the nature of an open source program. This kind of program do have an author that retains all the right on his program, including the one to sell it or even to relicense it under a proprietary license. What the open source license do is guarantee that the versions covered by the license will remain free to be modified, distributed and used. For that reason, if Innotek decided that VirtualBox becomes only a proprietary program, they wouldn't be able to prevent someone from taking the free version and improving it. Also, any modification that is not autorised to be used in a proprietary version would have to be discarded (although it is unlikely since Innotek probably ask the contributions to be licensed to them with a flexible license). So Technologov is correct by saying that what's missing is the manpower to develop VirtualBox. It takes a lot of competences that is not widely available for free. However, it still remains possible because of the open source licence. However, you won't be able to modify the USB stack that is proprietary. 2. Will VB stop being an open program? Will I have to pay Sun to get new versions of this? Will VB on Mac die? That depends on Innotek and Sun. However, it would not be very bright of Sun to kill the free version of the program simply because there is much more competition now (think Vmware, Qemu, Parallel, etc). Furthermore, Sun stands to gain much more by simply adding enterprise features and profiting from the work of volunteers. There may not be much contributors right now, but as VirtualBox gets adopted in various distributions, that may change. Remember that in the beginning of 2007, almost nobody knew VirtualBox... So I don't think it is a bad news. It may even be good for Innotek because that may guarantee their future. And for Sun, it may give them leverage against Vmware and IBM. | | Всего записей: 1127 | Зарегистр. 27-03-2007 | Отправлено: 09:55 18-03-2008 | Исправлено: makarei, 09:59 18-03-2008 |
