While it wasn't as jaw-droppingly brilliant as such future releases like 1988's Truth and Soul and 1991's The Reality of My Surroundings would be, Fishbone's self-titled debut from 1985 sounded, at the time, totally unlike anything on the music scene. Although it only contains six songs total and their more hard-rocking direction of the future isn't yet present, it remains Fishbone's most ska-based work. By incorporating the energy and unpredictability of punk rock, however, the EP was an obviously important influence on the 1990s popular alterna-ska scene (No Doubt, Sublime, etc.). One of the band's perennial concert favorites, "Party at Ground Zero," is included and remains an invigorating listen years later. Other lesser-known highlights include the cutting edge sounds of "? (Modern Industry)," in which the bandmembers shout out radio station call letters as opposed to conventional lyrics, as well as "Another Generation." While the album opener "Ugly" was an early fan favorite, the lyrics are quite silly, and the closing track, "Lyin' Ass Bitch," hasn't aged well either, especially when heard in the politically correct '90s. The Family Stand's small but loyal following argued that Moon in Scorpio was simply too ambitious and too creative for urban contemporary radio, and they're right. Much of the material was too rock-minded for R&B stations, and even the CD's less guitar-heavy offerings (such as "The Education of Jamie," "Plantation Radio," and the Prince-like "Quiet Desperation") didn't make the playlists of stations that were only interested in finding the next Guy clone or yet another Teddy Riley wannabe. "Plantation Radio," in fact, lambasts urban radio's frustrating conservatism. But while Moon in Scorpio wasn't a huge commercial hit, its meaty blend of R&B and rock was a creative triumph. One can hear a variety of soul and rock influences on this album -- not only Prince and Sly & the Family Stone, but also, Ike & Tina Turner and Mother's Finest. In fact, Sandra St. Victor's gritty vocals bear a definite resemblance to MF singer Joyce Kennedy, while Peter Lord's singing has a Prince-like quality. Although such comparisons are well and good, it's important to stress that the Family Stand is a fine band in its own right. On Suitcase, his eighth studio release, Keb' Mo' (Kevin Moore) reunites with John Porter, the producer of Moore's critically lauded first album, and the result is a pleasant, midtempo suite of songs dedicated to the emotional baggage everyone carries with them as they plow through increasingly complicated lives in search of peace, love, and some measure of personal redemption. Moore covers this ground with a wink and a grin in his voice, though, and Suitcase emerges as a wry commentary on modern life that still manages to sound bright and positive, beginning with the effervescent, sprung reggae rhythm of the opening track, "Your Love," one of the best cuts here. Other highlights include the lovely ballad, "Still There for Me," a celebration of the little man and his private victories, "I'm a Hero," and the soothing, hopeful shuffle that closes things out, "Life Is Beautiful." Moore is generally classified as a blues player, but the truth is, aside from his first album, he has actually done very little true blues material, and it is probably more accurate to call what he does blues-informed, but even that ignores the point that he is probably much closer in tone, theme, and feel to James Taylor than he is to Robert Johnson or any other blues figure. He does turn to the blues here, though, on the title track, "Suitcase," and morphs it into a wonderfully engaging song about what people bring into a romantic relationship and what they take away in the end, making full use of the "emotional baggage" connection inherent in the title. It is Keb' Mo' at his best, drawing on his ability to synthesize roots forms like the blues into completely contemporary commentaries on the struggles, travails, and blind faith in personal redemption that accompanies people as they slog their way daily ever deeper into the 21st century. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
