Now he is reaching a new and elevated level of pure jazz artistry with Earfood. A studio recording of his live touring repertoire with his working quintet, Hargrove presents several ballads, favorites from jazz veterans, and well rendered originals, all in the spirit of the famed trumpeters who preceded him. Alto saxophonist Justin Robinson and pianist Gerald Clayton are not only rising stars and standout soloists, but also players perfectly compatible to play this contemporary and mainstream modern jazz. Add young bassist Danton Bolder and the excellent drummer Montez Coleman, and you have a band that can bring Hargrove's music fully to life. It is said that everyone learns from their mistakes, but if that is true, Hargrove has gone far beyond the pale, and is flawless here, in terms of both concept and execution. The CD comes out of the box with four home runs -- an ultra hip contemporary version of the Cedar Walton tune "I Am Not So Sure," a sweet 7/8 beat for "Brown" with outstanding piano from Clayton, "Strasbourg/St. Denis" sporting an infectiously happy aura, clever staccato unison and chatty counterpoint from the horns, and the sleek, breezy and soulful "Starmaker" which sounds like it could have come from the book of the late pianist James Williams. There's also a remake of the great Weldon Irvine original blues-funk-soul classic "Mr. Clean" that is well done but not overcooked, an excellent version showcasing varying subtleties and dynamics during the Larry Willis composition "To Wisdom the Prize," and the good swinger "The Stinger," soaked in harmonic colors and good vibes. The four salt-and-pepper ballads all show Hargrove's expert ability to play slow and soulfully, still unfortunately becoming a lost art, with "Joy Is Sorrow Unmasked" and "Rouge" particularly poignant. The CD concludes with an in-concert gospel-soul version of Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me," as good a coda to this set as could be. There are no missteps on this program, no filler tunes, the trumpeter simply playing as precisely -- if not better -- than he ever has, and a band who fully understands how to make his music come alive. Run-D.M.C. and King of Rock had established the crew's fusion of hip-hop and hard rock, but that sound didn't blossom until Raising Hell, partially due to the presence of Rick Rubin as producer. Rubin loved metal and rap in equal measures and he knew how to play to the strengths of both, while slipping in commercial concessions that seemed sly even when they borrowed from songs as familiar as "My Sharona" (heard on "It's Tricky"). Along with longtime Run-D.M.C. producer Russell Simmons, Rubin blew down the doors of what hip-hop could do with Raising Hell because it reached beyond rap-rock and found all sorts of sounds outside of it. Sonically, there is simply more going on in this album than any previous rap record -- more hooks, more drum loops (courtesy of ace drum programmer Sam Sever), more scratching, more riffs, more of everything. Where other rap records, including Run-D.M.C.'s, were all about the rhythm, this is layered with sounds and ideas, giving the music a tangible flow. But the brilliance of this record is that even with this increased musical depth, it still rocks as hard as hell, and in a manner that brought in a new audience. Of course, the cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," complete with that band's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, helped matters considerably, since it gave an audience unfamiliar with rap an entry point, but if it were just a novelty record, a one-shot fusion of rap and rock, Raising Hell would never have sold three million copies. No, the music was fully realized and thoroughly invigorating, rocking harder and better than any of its rock or rap peers in 1986, and years later, that sense of excitement is still palpable on this towering success story for rap in general and Run-D.M.C. in specific. Cut at Generation Sound Studios in New York City, the band consisted of Jarrett on piano and soprano saxophone, Dewey Redman on tenor, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Paul Motian. And though he would more than likely disagree, this was the best band he ever led. In addition to the quartet, guitarist Sam Brown contributes to a pair of cuts here as Guilherme Franco and Danny Johnson add percussion to the mix. The set kicks off with the beautiful "The Rich (And the Poor)," a folkish melody of the type Jarrett was exploring on ECM at the time, with some stellar African undertones -- it's easy to hear the majesty of Abdullah Ibrahim's South African musical sphere in this mix, and earthy deep, sparer work by Redman and Haden. The brief "Blue Streak," by contrast, is full-on and busy with melody and interplay between Redman and Motian. More speculative group improvisation occurs on "Fullsuvollivus," which travels decidedly outside, and the title cut with Sam Jones on electric guitar in place of Redman is a lithe, elegant, midtempo ballad that showcases Jarrett's truly magnificent melodic work in front of this enlarged rhythm section. The hardest groover on this set is their killer "Le Mistral," with some gorgeous interplay between Haden and Motian, and some extended solo work by Redman. "Angles (Without Edges)" is a dense construction that involves some taut counterpoint between Redman and Jarrett, even as the rhythm section tries to push them both inside toward one another -- Redman slips out of the frame a few times to excellent effect. Haden's solo is also particularly noteworthy. Brown returns on the closer "Sister Fortune," a track with almost rockist overtones. Jarrett had perhaps heard some records in his day, particularly from the Atlantic catalog, and he put that spin on this melody, which incorporates groove, repetitive and circular rhythm, and a songlike melodic structure with minimal improvisation -- though his own fills are quite stunning and deep in the pulse pocket. Yet even in his heyday back in the formative years of smooth jazz, Najee was more about great overall tracks than worrying about such perceptions -- his fans can assume then, that like always, his new point of view is varied, designed to keep them on their toes. Najee spent the first years of the new millennium playing with Prince, and some residual funk rubs off on the catchy Rex Rideout collaborations "Back in the Day" and retro-flavored "Charm," whose sonic effects and wah guitar by Dwight Sills truly take you back. Chris "Big Dog" Davis produced the album's big ballads, the silky title track and the moody, ambient "How Lovely You Are." Because Najee is shown throughout the packaging playing the soprano, his more aggressive alto energy on the James Lloyd-produced "2nd 2 None" comes along as a spirited surprise that makes you want even more. "Girlfriend" continued in the Jody Watley tradition, with hard, urban dance beats and a dramatic story line. "Girlfriend" was also an early hit for Babyface as a songwriter, and, like Karyn White's Babyface-penned hits of the time, possessed an earthy grit which became lost under the adult contemporary gloss found in latter-day Babyface compositions. "Mercedes Boy," a sleek, sophisticated slice of urban dance pop, proved an even bigger hit than its predecessor, although the version here is somewhat tepid compared to the superior single remix, which can be found on Pebbles' 2000 Greatest Hits collection. Pebbles, like her contemporaries Karyn White, Jody Watley, and Paula Abdul, became a big star in the late 1980s, but that success could no longer translate to the early 1990s, when R&B took a much more aggressive and hard-edged direction. The rest of Pebbles' debut was somewhat pleasurable, but lightweight and rather unmemorable, and a third single, "Take Your Time," failed to ignite the charts, although her two later albums showed a considerable growth in artistry. Regardless, no collection of 1980s dance/pop/R&B would be complete without these two major hits, but the casual fan would be better off with Greatest Hits. ~ Jose F.
