Down to a duo, the Coup officially becomes a vehicle for Boots Riley's observations, which it mostly was already; still, there's a greater focus simply from the fact that it's a product of one ambitious vision. Boots' impassioned political rhetoric is still in full force, but the main strengths of Steal This Album are its fleshed-out characters and witty, detailed, image-rich storytelling that would do Slick Rick proud. Its intellectual and emotional depth comes from Boots finding the humanity not only in his ideology, but in a much-maligned class of people, articulating their frustrations and analyzing the world they live in from both the inside and outside. His flair for the dramatic reaches its apex on the seven-minute saga "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night." It's a complex, cinematic story about a young man who loathes his father -- an abusive pimp who eventually beats his mother to death -- but can't help internalizing some of the same behavior. Equally touching is "Underdogs," a heartbreaking account of the everyday reality of poverty. Boots' ironic wit is all over the rest of the record. The dark-humored "Breathing Apparatus" finds a gunshot victim with no health insurance pleading with his friend not to let doctors pull the plug. Elsewhere, the previous album's Repo Man returns (in the person of Del tha Funkee Homosapien) on "The Repo Man Sings for You"; and Boots acts out a gleefully provocative fantasy (on record, anyway) with "Piss on Your Grave," which concerns slave owner George Washington. Aril Brikha is another Swede who sailed onto my radar after I read a review of his “Winter” 12” in IDJ Magazine, and the full length “Ex Machina” is now spinning quite a lot in my player.   If you like groovy techno beats, fat basslines, airy strings, trippy sequences and monotone moods, this is for you. It’s very danceable, but at the same time it’s excellent music for writing reviews.   Aril claims he’s brought up on Depeche Mode and Nitzer Ebb, but this might not be immediately obvious in his music, except maybe in “Kind of Nitzer”, a fast number with a cool bassline destined for the dance floor.   The album is not wildly varied, but it’s got a great flow to it. There aren't many artists that have a veritable vault of back dated and in demand tracks, but calibre is an exception to the rule. None of the tracks on 'shelf life' have ever been on cd format before and have only been played by a select few lucky enough to have been given them on plate. 'venue & mars' seems to be the track everyone's purring about and with good reason too, but it's his remix of klute's hospital classic, 'part of me'. That really catches the ear. Not many would or could try to remix such a tune, but he does it with ease. Quality stuff! 'acrobat' is another track that everyone's waiting for, being the kind of tune that epitomises seminal nights such as speed, and 'easy on my mind' furthers that cause with its funky swinging bassline. 're-entry' has a more sinister feel to it and will turn heads, while 'peace of mind' is quite simply classic calibre. The d&b track list goes on, in all there is thirteen killers. 'makes me wonder' (original) is proper house music, whilst 'cold blade' & beat 97' explore reverberating sub bass. 'jibaro's beats and vibes take us to brazil. 'idris' flows with effortless jazz beats before evolving into a mysterious hidden track but who am i to tell you which tracks stand out? what i can say though is that dominic martin will go down in dance music history as one of its legendary producers. Consistent and prodigiously talented, this compilation acts as a testament to his unique style, and shows there's a lot more to come! Before the trumpet even enters the picture, the story has been broken off somewhere in the middle, with deep street music melding with a secret language held within the band and those who can actually hear this music -- certainly not the majority of Miles' fan base built up over the past 25 years. They heard this as a huge "f*ck you." Miles just shrugged and told them it wasn't personal, but they could take it that way if they wanted to, and he blew on his trumpet. Here are killer groove riffs that barely hold on as bleating trumpet and soprano sax lines (courtesy of Dave Liebman on track one) interact with John McLaughlin's distortion-box frenzy. Michael Henderson's bass keeps the basic so basic it hypnotizes; keyboards slowly enter the picture, a pair of them handled by Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, as well as Ivory Williams' synthesizer. Finally, Colin Walcott jumps in with an electric sitar and there are no less than five drummers -- three kits (Al Foster, Billy Hart, and Jack DeJohnette), a tabla player, and Mtume. It's a four-tune suite, "On the Corner" is, but the separations hardly matter, just the shifts in groove that alter the time/space continuum. After 20 minutes, the set feels over and a form of Miles' strange lyricism returns in "Black Satin." Though a tabla kicks the tune off, there's a recognizable eight-note melody that runs throughout. Carlos Garnett and Bennie Maupin replace Liebman, Dave Creamer replaces McLaughlin, and the groove rides a bit easier -- except for those hand bells shimmering in the background off the beat just enough to make the squares crazy. The respite is short-lived, however. Davis and band move the music way over to the funk side of the street -- though the street funkers thought these cats were too weird with their stranded time signatures and modal fugues that begin and end nowhere and live for the way the riff breaks down into emptiness. "One and One" begins the new tale, so jazz breaks down and gets polished off and resurrected as a far blacker, deeper-than-blue character in the form of "Helen Butte/Mr. Freedom X," where guitars and horns careen off Henderson's cracking bass and Foster's skittering hi-hats.
