The album follows up the duo's previous collaboration, 2012's It's Love, which featured production from Loeb and showcased their synergistic musical creativity throughout. This time out, they share production duties on nine original compositions and one cover, an expressive Latin jazz reading of pianist Keith Jarrett's "Lucky Southern." Here, they are joined by esteemed bassist John Patitucci as well as drummer Byron Landham and percussionist David Charles. While Bridges certainly fits nicely into the smooth jazz genre, there's something deeply thoughtful, organic, and probing about the music Marienthal and Loeb make together. These are languid, textural productions that cross the boundaries between groove-oriented jazz, atmospheric new age, and exuberant electric fusion. Cuts like the evocative leadoff "Westward" and the dreamy, introspective "Crossing" set the album's mood, with Loeb's delicately arpeggiated guitar riffs complemented by Marienthal's supple saxophone melodies. While the full group tracks are superb, the inventive duo tracks impress the most. On the flamenco-infused "Puentes," Marienthal creatively employs his saxophone keys as a percussion instrument, weaving the airy, woody rhythm into Loeb's own percussive acoustic guitar motif. Marienthal then overdubs a second lead melody line against that harmonic bed, and it all works so beautifully that you'd never guess it wasn't all played live. Elsewhere, they dive headlong into the swinging '60s jazz-funk of "Last Minute Blues," dance their way through the aforementioned "Lucky Southern," and take a meditative drive toward the horizon on the John Coltrane-influenced "Sun Rays." ~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide |

Tenor saxophonist JD Allen, whose talents as a composer deserve much wider recognition, designed the songs on this album to allow for maximum flexibility and exploration. As a leader, he gives his bandmates (the talented Gregg August on bass and the endlessly innovative Rudy Royston on drums) plenty of room to experiment, innovate and thrive. But the real star of the show is Allen’s bold artistic vision. The infectious “Naked,” for example, consists of two ascending melodic motifs that start, stop and repeat at Allen’s discretion. With Royston following along in lockstep (Allen chose not to use bass to give the song the illusion of playing in a free form), the song feels completely spontaneous, yet oddly coherent. Surprisingly, each solo section adheres to a firm 16-bar structure. Other compositions demonstrate Allen’s poetic sensibility. “Jawn Henry,” inspired by the African-American folktale, evokes the sound of a chugging locomotive and the clang of the hero’s hammer hitting a steel drill. The tune features a unique 20-bar solo section that oscillates between driving swing and a timeless rubato feel, allowing Allen’s tenor to soar. Despite his forward-looking compositional style and distinctly modern sound, the ambitious saxophonist hasn’t lost his fidelity to the sounds of yesteryear. “Indigo (Blue Like)” is an in-the-pocket swinger, a refreshingly new take on an ageless jazz style. But as Allen says in the liner notes, “Sometimes … the most avant-garde thing that a jazz musician could do today is try to straight up and down swing.” Allen is now part of the great lineage of saxophonist-songwriters that includes John Coltrane, Benny Golson and Wayne Shorter. Цитата:| The problem with attacking easy targets in order to make a point is that they're, well, too easy to attack. Take smooth jazz, for example. If one's premise is that smooth jazz in general is bland, mindless, and devoid of substance, it's easy to make that point by lambasting Kenny G, Richard Elliot, and other whipping boys of the jazz media. But when names like Grover Washington, Jr., George Benson, and David Sanborn are brought into the discussion, it becomes much harder to make the argument that nothing worthwhile ever came out of smooth jazz. And even though True Love, the third album by smooth jazz saxophonist Jessica Spinella, aka Jessy J, has its shortcomings, it would be a mistake to dismiss her as a lightweight. Actually, True Love has more ups than downs. Jessy's sound is Washington-minded, but with a strong Latin influence -- and unlike so many of the Washington admirers in smooth jazz, she obviously cares about projecting a sound and identity of her own. True Love is smooth jazz meets Latin jazz; Jessy is a Mexican-American from the West Coast, although this 2009 release gets its inspiration from Afro-Cuban salsa ("Baila!," "Tropical Rain"), Brazilian samba ("Brazilian Dance," Luiz Bonfá's familiar "Manha de Carnaval"), and Spanish nuevo flamenco (the title song) more than the regional Mexican music (ranchera, mariachi, norteño, banda, duranguense, grupero, etc.) that is hugely popular in the southwestern United States. Occasionally, Jessy (who is primarily an instrumentalist) sings on True Love -- and while she is a better saxophonist than singer, her vocals have a sweetly pleasant quality. Jessy, unfortunately, does play it a bit too safe on True Love and doesn't let loose as much as she could; this is a generally decent effort, but she is capable of much more. Nonetheless, True Love demonstrates that Jessy has talent, chops, and originality and is well worth keeping an eye on. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide |
